From Moscow to Melbourne: A 41-Year Journey to Only Institute
How childhood graphics for my father's papers became a research laboratory
From Moscow to Melbourne
The Beginning
I don't remember a time before mathematics was in the house. My father's papers covered the kitchen table — equations, proofs, diagrams. I was drawing graphics for his publications before I could read the equations they illustrated.
Moscow
Growing up in Moscow, I was surrounded by the tradition of fundamental research. The rigor. The beauty of a well-constructed proof. The understanding that mathematics is not just a tool but a way of seeing the world.
Australia
The journey to Australia brought new perspectives — the pragmatism of building things that work, not just things that are beautiful. But the mathematical foundation never left.
Only Institute
Two years ago, I started building. Forty-one years ago, I started dreaming. Only Institute is the convergence of both: a research laboratory where mathematical governance meets autonomous systems, where the rigor of Moscow meets the pragmatism of Melbourne.
Why Now
We are at a turning point. Autonomous agents are becoming real. The question is not whether they will be deployed, but whether they will be governed. I believe mathematics — not monitoring — is the answer. That belief is the foundation of everything we build.
